Beginner Gardening Lessons I Wish I Knew Sooner (And the Essentials That Made It Easier)

Beginner Gardening Lessons I Wish I Knew Sooner (And the Essentials That Made It Easier)

If you’re just starting your gardening journey, let me save you some time…

Because most of us don’t quit gardening because we can’t grow.

We quit because we:

  • start too big
  • choose the wrong setup
  • get overwhelmed
  • or think we’re doing something wrong

The truth?

👉 Gardening is simple once you understand a few key things.

These are the beginner gardening lessons that completely changed everything for me—and the essentials that made it easier along the way.

🌿 1. Start Smaller Than You Think

You do NOT need a full garden to get started.

You need:

  • 1–3 containers
  • a few plants
  • and consistency

That’s it.

Most beginners fail because they try to do too much too fast.

Start small → build confidence → expand later.

🪴 My Favorite Beginner Containers

  • Wooden barrel planters (great for stability + space)
  • Metal or corten steel planters (modern + durable)

👉 These are the exact types I recommend for beginners because they’re:

  • easy to manage
  • big enough for real growth
  • long-lasting

☀️ 2. Sunlight Determines Everything

Before you buy ANY plant…

Figure out your sunlight.

This is where most people go wrong.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • 6+ hours of sun → tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers
  • 4–6 hours → herbs, lettuce, strawberries
  • Less than 4 hours → leafy greens, herbs

👉 Your plants will only do as well as your sunlight allows.

💡 Pro tip: Watch your space throughout the day BEFORE planting.

🌱 3. Healthy Soil Solves Most Problems

If your plants are struggling…

It’s usually not you.
It’s the soil.

Good soil =

  • better drainage
  • stronger roots
  • healthier plants

🌿 What to Look For in Soil

  • Light and fluffy texture
  • Drains well (not soggy)
  • Organic nutrients

🛍️ My Go-To Soil Types

  • Organic potting mix
  • Raised bed + container mix
  • Soil + perlite blend for drainage

👉 I linked my exact favorites here (same ones I use):

🌿 4. You WILL Lose Plants (And That’s Normal)

This one is important.

Because no one talks about it enough.

You will:

  • overwater something
  • underwater something
  • lose a plant

Even experienced gardeners do.

👉 It’s part of the process.

Every “failure” teaches you something:

  • more sun
  • less water
  • bigger container

That’s how you get better.

🍅 5. Gardening Changes How You See Food

Once you grow your own food…

Everything changes.

You start to:

  • appreciate every harvest
  • waste less
  • get creative with what you grow

It becomes more than gardening.

It becomes a lifestyle.

🌿 What You Actually Need to Get Started

Keep it simple.

You don’t need everything.

Just start with:

  • 1–3 containers
  • quality soil
  • beginner-friendly plants
  • basic tools

👉 I’ve already put together everything I personally use and recommend here:
https://a.co/d/0a5nx67p

This is exactly what I would buy if I had to start over.

🌱 Final Thoughts

If you’re feeling overwhelmed…

Start here:

  • smaller than you think
  • with the right sunlight
  • and good soil

Everything else comes with time.

You don’t need to be perfect.

You just need to start.
